CONSTRUCTION CONTINUES ON THE SOCIETY HOTEL BINGEN
Waechter Architecture is pleased to share construction progress on our latest project: The Society Hotel in Bingen, Washington. This project involves the adaptive reuse of an old elementary school, but the primary design intervention is a new series of cabins surrounding a central spa building.
Located along the scenic Columbia River, the site is located in a residential area separated form the waterfront by a series of industrial facilities. A sensitivity to the scale of the neighboring houses was important, as was establishing a connection to the greater landscape. The design accomplishes both by organizing the cabins in a ring that share a single roof, defining a courtyard through which the town and landscape become framed. Inwardly focused but outwardly drawn. The effect is one of an "edited panorama," where neighborhood privacy is guarded and the relationship to the landscape amplified through smaller framed views cut from the building mass and a larger sky view established by the continuous roof line.
Expected completion of the new hotel in May 2019.
