About

Waechter Architecture is a Pacific Northwest–based, award-winning interdisciplinary design practice with an acclaimed portfolio spanning diverse project types.
Guided by the experiential qualities of the built environment, our work is defined by clear organization, thoughtful integration, economical design, and a refined material palette. We look to the past to inform the future—combining the enduring simplicity of traditional buildings with contemporary systems and material technologies to create architecture that is both highly sustainable and built to last.

Our collaborative approach invites clients, partners, and communities to share in the art of building. Working closely with stakeholders, we identify essential needs, uncover opportunities, and develop a shared vision that leads to architecture that is both enduring and responsive. At the core of our practice is a culture that values diverse perspectives and treats our clients as equal partners in the design process.

We believe architecture plays a meaningful role in human well-being. Beyond performance metrics, healthy buildings are shaped by light, air, materiality, and proportion—by spaces that support daily rhythms and offer moments of calm and connection. Our work prioritizes spaces that are easily understood, have access to daylight and fresh air, and utilize materials chosen for both durability and their tactile, sensory qualities. By designing environments that feel intuitive and restorative, we aim to create architecture that supports the people who live, work, and gather within it.

Elevating Visitor Experience
Our hotel projects, winery facilities, tasting rooms, cafés, and restaurant spaces are dedicated to the principles of service and generosity, and we work closely with our clients to ensure that each is tailored to place and the needs of visitors and guests.

Singular, Ecological, and Expressive Materials
The wise use of materials is central to a building’s character, ecological footprint, and enduring value. When they are expressed simply and beautifully, they can create a sense of calm, clarity, and timelessness.

Right-sizing Residences and Communities
Waechter was founded on the design of thoughtful, efficient, and inviting residences and accessory dwellings, and we’ve expanded on this expertise to deliver innovative multi-family projects for public and private-sector partners.

Visionary Mixed-use Concepts

In our commercial work, we work to maximize flexibility while establishing a strong identity and civic presence. We’re experts at incorporating retail, workplace, and residential functions, and designing spaces to adapt and change to meet the market.

Designing to a Budget
Whether a single-family residence or a high-end hotel, every project deserves the highest level of care and attention. We understand that each comes with limited resources, and we’re experts at finding simple and economical solutions to meet your goals.

Adaptive Reuse and Transformation
Preserving history, reducing waste, and enhancing existing spaces are all forms of conservation and service. We’ve worked to restore and reinterpret a range of building types—historic schools, industrial buildings, apartment buildings, and private residences—and welcome the chance to breathe new life into existing buildings.

The Clarity Project: How We Work
A unifying goal across all projects can be summarized in a word:
Clarity. Through research, inquiry and focused design investigation, we work with our clients and collaborators to guide projects from concept to completion.

<img width="2500" height="1562" width_o="2500" height_o="1562" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/bec928105e97ea281818f89baffec61c5f83c432202ba22314c541af33f428a5/Mass-Timber_Thumb.jpg" data-mid="243657815" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/bec928105e97ea281818f89baffec61c5f83c432202ba22314c541af33f428a5/Mass-Timber_Thumb.jpg" />

Mass Timber Innovation
One of Waechter’s core projects has been to capture the utility and clarity of earlier eras of building and translate these into efficient and ecological mass timber construction. The goal of this effort is to create, refine, and advance the adoption of a highly sustainable, durable, and all-purpose building typology for the 21st Century.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The All-Wood Studio
This Graduate Studio was conducted at the University of Oregon as part of Waechter Architecture’s ongoing work identifying a series of All-Wood design vocabularies. Over the course of three months, students identified individualized approaches to All-Wood design and helped expand a matrix of potential assembly, structural and MEP approaches.

The Clarity Studio

This studio was a speculative and experiential exercise offered at the University of Oregon to explore aspects of Waechter Architecture’s unique design process. Students carried out a series of studies of singular rooms progressing to full building proposals through the use of hand-made physical models.

Winter Solstice 2025

It’s been a challenging year in many ways. Yet as we look back, we are ever grateful for the clients, collaborators, and projects that have sustained and inspired us.

A few standouts from 2025

We’re proud to share that our work continues to garner recognition
around the country. Dwell featured our Golden Gate Heights renovation in
its evocative Before &amp; After, a quiet celebration of transformation perched in the hills of San Francisco. We were also honored to receive a 2025 American Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum for Dune House, architecture shaped by weather, restraint, and connection to place.

In addition to the recognition received for specific projects, Forbes recognized Waechter Architecture both among its Top 200 Residential Architects in the U.S. and on its America’s Best-In-State Residential Architects list — affirming work that’s rooted in place yet resonates well beyond it.

Opportunities &amp; Environments that support Well-Being

This coming week offers us the opportunity to recharge over the
holidays. Where we spend this time — the buildings and landscapes that
we return to year after year — has the power to enhance or hinder the
quality of that rest.

<img width="6192" height="4128" width_o="6192" height_o="4128" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4fd5f3a4497d061f3e50430bc18d22bf1575116ce9fa7f989106870684a0e46f/DSC00150.JPG" data-mid="243830486" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4fd5f3a4497d061f3e50430bc18d22bf1575116ce9fa7f989106870684a0e46f/DSC00150.JPG" />

We believe that architecture plays a meaningful role in human well-being. Beyond performance metrics, healthy buildings are shaped by light, air, materiality, and proportion — by spaces that support daily rhythms and offer moments of calm and connection. Our work prioritizes spaces that are easily understood, have access to daylight and fresh air, and utilize materials chosen for both durability and their tactile, sensory qualities. By designing environments that feel intuitive and restorative, we aim to create architecture that not only performs well over time, but supports the people who live, work, and gather within it.

Designing in the Landscape

As we look ahead to what’s next, our work is carrying us back into some
truly breathtaking terrain. New projects are taking shape beneath the
sharp silhouettes of the Tetons, where mountains meet big sky, and along
the Columbia River, where steep basalt cliffs, wide water, and river
wind guide the recreational energy of the gorge. One a house, and one a
hospitality destination, each project is born of careful listening — to
site, to client, and to context — and we’re looking forward to seeing
how these places guide the architecture as the year unfolds.
