In the last installment of the newsletter, mornings were still cold and wet, and evenings dark. And now it’s the (third) longest day of the year and sunset walks happen after 9pm. But work in the studio remains steady and a lot of good things have been happening. Read on for a brief update of what we’ve been up to the past few months, and what we’re looking forward to in the back half of the year. In Italy For the second year running, Ben is in northern Italy leading the University of Oregon School of Architecture’s study abroad program, co-teaching the studio with Jim Givens. Based in Vicenza near the Piazza dei Signori, the program travels throughout the Veneto and northwest into Switzerland. Along the way, students (and Ben) draw inspiration from the work of Palladio, Scarpa, Olgiati, Märkli, and Zumthor.&nbsp; The students recently completed their midterm, and had the pleasure of a fantastic jury. The Vicenza program's original founders, Jenny Young and Don Corner, joined for the week. Other jurors included: Cosimo Monteleone from the University of Padova as well as mass timber experts Giovanni Traverso and Paola Vighy of Traverso Vighy Architetti. A special guest was Kim Williams, founder and director emerita of the biennial conference series “Nexus: Architecture and Mathematics” and founder of Kim Williams Books. (Photo: Ben Waechter) A note from Ben about a recent highlight: “Our group was fortunate to visit Andrea Palladio's Villa Forni Cerato (1570) currently under restoration here in the Veneto. Ben was featured in a Pro-File interview in Residential Design Magazine, further discussing the firm's interest in mass timber as a means of producing architecture with a clear identity. In just a few weeks time, celebrity chef Brian Malarkey’s ‘The Malarkey’ will be opening its doors for service. Waechter led the buildout and Tricorn Black – an interior design firm out of Bend – added Malarkey’s signature style to create what Brooke Jackson-Glidden from Eater referred to as an unapologetic spectacle. Carole Lundgren and Tim Wade are responsible for the vision of the new wine-centric boutique hotel set to open at the end of the year in the Granary District of McMinnville. At seventeen rooms, this small hotel will blend in and further activate an already happening neighborhood in wine country. With a keen interior designer (the client) and a great contractor (R&amp;H Construction), this project has been a pleasure to collaborate on.
