We have a passion for clarity—transforming complex conditions into spaces of elemental beauty and enduring value.

We work with our clients and partners to solve problems, reveal insights, and create inviting architecture for every place and purpose.

One of Waechter’s core initiatives over the last ten years has been to capture the utility and beauty of earlier eras of building and translate these into efficient and ecological mass timber construction. The goal has been to create a highly sustainable, durable, and all-purpose building typology for the 21st Century.

Our breakthrough arrived with the design, development, and construction of Mississippi Workshop, our mixed-use building in Portland, Oregon. The entirety of the building’s structure, perimeter, and interior is composed of engineered Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), resulting in spaces with uncommon warmth, solidity, and durability, as well as exceptional environmental performance.

This “All-Wood” approach has many advantages over standard CLT construction, and we are working to expand its application in the design of new civic, commercial, workplace, and residential projects. We’re currently partnering with engineers, fabricators, and developers to develop and share strategies and findings through a USDA / USFS Wood Innovation Grant, which will result in a range of scalable and implementable approaches for nearly any application.

Built with sustainably sourced timber, the wood fiber in Mississippi’s CLT panels was regrown in approximately 15 minutes.

Agile, adaptive, and durable as it is beautiful, our design strategy reinterprets and updates the classic industrial loft typology for the 21st Century.

All Welcome

The social and ecological value of mass timber multiplies a project’s impact and potential. We are committed to exploring the civic dimension of this constructive logic and design approach.
