Hopscotch is an immersive gallery space for an emerging arts presenter focused on interactive new media artists and installations. Building on the success of Hopscotch PDX, the newest Los Angeles incarnation is our second collaboration. Currently under construction, it is expected to open in winter 2026.
Working closely with the gallery directors, our exploration was equal parts pragmatic and evocative, seeking new ways of linking artist environments and offering visitors a wide spectrum of possibilities for engagement. Located on the San Pedro waterfront, as part of the West Harbor development, the design challenge of this project was finding a way to create a space that has a distinct identity and feel that fits the exploratory character of Hopscotch, while still working in service of gallery spaces and art that are constantly changing.
To this goal, the design focuses on reimagining the gallery circulation as a distinct and social experience. The space is organized as a series of thickened parallel walls that extend the full height of the gallery, capturing the profile of the space’s dramatic gable. The walls define a series of open exhibition bands that can be subdivided and changed per installation. This layered arrangement creates an evolving experience for the visitor, as they travel through multiple thresholds over the course of their viewing. Unique openings in each wall provide both character and motivation to choreography of the space. Each thickened wall additionally contains back-of-house and support functions, such as bathrooms and storage.
Through its distinct character and choreography, the design adds to the unfolding and immersive nature of the gallery, while giving visitors the feeling of being backstage for diverse acts of creation.
